Audi is celebrating a silver jubilee: 25 years ago the company introduced the TDI powertrain, which has since become the most successful efficiency technology on the road and on the race course.

Audi’s leading role in diesel technology is based on a head start established decades ago. Audi engineers have achieved decisive breakthroughs time and again, the most significant one being the world’s first TDI engine for cars which Audi presented in 1989. By now TDI is the powerful, economical and efficient alternative for future vehicle propulsion. Combustion in TDI engines with a common rail system and Piezo injectors is particularly smooth, efficient and acoustically pleasing. At the same time emissions are reduced, among others by a standard diesel particle filter. The turbocharger with adjustable guide blade geometry significantly contributes to high torque and the noticeable increase in performance despite unchanged engine displacement. In addition, performance can be distinctly enhanced by a controlled supply of air to the cylinder. Another advantage of that is exhaust gas recirculation which allows for a further reduction of nitrous gases. Fuel economy, low emissions, a huge performance yield – made possible with future-oriented technologies. The TDI engines of the latest generation are supremely efficient high-tech aggregates.
