Audi as part of VWSA lends support to fight COVID-19
Volkswagen Group South Africa, which Audi forms a part of, have increased efforts to provide aid in the fight against COVID-19. This includes a planned conversion of our unused 66 000 sqm PE plant into a temporary medical facility in the Eastern Cape. The facility could accommodate up to 4000 patients and will be used as an overflow medical venue which will also address the needs of high-acuity patients who require oxygenation.
This project is a result of collaboration formed between our Group, the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and the Eastern Cape Department of Health. Following the signing of the agreement, the facility is to be completed in phases and handed over to local government as the need for medical care in the Metro develops with the plant being made available to government until March 2021.
The first phase is currently ongoing and will take approximately six to eight weeks for completion. The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) will provide funding of 5.2 million Euros (R107 million) to support the conversion of the plant as well as the procurement of protective gear (PPE) for staff at regional tertiary hospitals, regional Primary Care Clinics and 49 COVID-19 test centres. The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusamenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH will provide the performance framework to account for the public and private engagement and will foster the cooperation with the private sector to establish a sustainable strategic alliance in Nelson Mandela Bay.
Our Group will contribute R28 million to the project. Additionally, we will provide project management for the conversion of the facility and management of the procurement of the critical Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Furthermore, our Group has donated 150 beds to the NMB stadium’s COVID-19 isolation facility. As the Audi brand, we couldn’t be prouder to be part of an amazing Group in South Africa.
