Volkswagen Group South Africa (VWSA) in which the Audi brand forms part of in South Africa, has been focusing efforts on the manufacture of masks and medical equipment to support in the fight against COVID-19 in our country. Our local engineers are part of an international Volkswagen Group team are pioneering possible ways in which the company can assist during the global crisis. Following a successful trial batch, the production of soft fabric face masks has begun, with the goal of delivering a few thousand masks over the coming weeks in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, which is the home base of the Volkswagen Group. There has also been positive collaboration between ourselves and the local Government in gearing up to manufacture medical equipment such as ventilators. Through the use of our local 3D printing technology, the aim is to produce parts for a mechanical ventilator which could ensure sufficient supply of medical equipment in our country. The ventilator is based on an open-source design created by the SEAT brand in Spain. In the interim, our Group’s legal team is in the process of obtaining the necessary medical release from the relevant local authorities before commencing with mass production of the medical gear. As the Audi brand, it give us great pride to be part of the Volkswagen Group where innovation, collaboration and synergies can contribute to a greater cause. Globally, Audi has provided five million euros to the corona crisis. When it counts, the world moves closer together.
