The R tronic can be operated with an especially developed joystick positioned on the centre console using shift-by-wire technology or with the gearshift paddles on the steering-wheel – quickly and easily with a minimum loss of power flow. Switching to sport mode shortens the shift times even further for a real motor sport feel. The R tronic also combines two convincing arguments: low fuel consumption and a racing-style gearshift feel.
The technology behind it: the gearing of the mechanical 6-speed manual gearbox with dry double-plate clutch is matched exactly to the engine and driving performance of the Audi R8. The driven wheels thus receive the maximum drive torque of up to 430 Nm across virtually the entire gearshift and engine speed range.
Moreover, the gearbox in the Audi R8 is notable for its compact design and the resulting low weight. To this end, an electrohydraulic shifting unit replaces the mechanical control unit of the basic gearbox. Signals are transmitted "by wire". That means the gear changes are performed precisely by an electronic signal. This substantially reduces shifting time.
